Geely Radar Launches Its All-Electric Pickup Truck, Radar King Kong
On December 23, 2024, Geely Radar officially launched its first-ever pure electric pickup, the Radar King Kong, in Wenchang, Hainan. This new model features a unibody design and offers both standard and extended cargo bed sizes. Customers can choose from seven different variants based on vehicle size and drivetrain options, with a limited-time price range from ¥99,800 to ¥159,800. As a pure electric pickup designed specifically for the commercial market, the Radar King Kong brings significant innovations in power, efficiency, handling, and safety, effectively reshaping the market for traditional diesel four-wheel-drive pickups. This article will explore the key innovations of the Radar King Kong and its profound impact on both the commercial sector and consumers.
Leveraging Geely Holding Group’s technology platform and resource advantages, Geely Radar has successfully developed China’s first native pure electric pickup platform, continuing to lead the country’s new energy market. The release of the Radar King Kong is not only a strategic move for Geely Radar to enter the commercial pickup market but also marks a milestone in transitioning from "oil-electric parity" to "electric cheaper than oil." This vehicle provides more solutions for commercial users while offering cutting-edge performance and competitive pricing, benefiting customers significantly.
With changes in the economic environment, consumers are becoming more rational in their purchasing decisions, focusing on low investment and high returns. Traditional pickups no longer meet the increasingly diverse operational needs, while electric pickups offer clear advantages. Specifically, for high-frequency commercial use, where daily mileage typically ranges from 50-100 km, an electric pickup with strong payload capacity, durability, and cost-effectiveness better meets these demands. Additionally, the electric pickup can serve as a comprehensive platform integrating energy, intelligence, and IoT technologies, providing users with even more diversified solutions.
The Radar King Kong is equipped with a 280 kW high-power electric motor, surpassing traditional 2.4T diesel pickups (137 kW), and even outperforming 3.0T diesel models by 15 kW. The four-wheel-drive Radar King Kong accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, and in a full load condition, it still reaches 0-100 km/h in 7.8 seconds, significantly outperforming conventional fuel pickups. Additionally, with a maximum torque of 485 Nm, a 95% maximum gradeability, and an instant-response off-road capability, the Radar King Kong excels in a variety of challenging terrains.
The vehicle is also equipped with a five-star battery protection system, with a minimum ground clearance of 225mm to reduce the risk of undercarriage scraping. The body structure incorporates high-strength steel, with 70% of the vehicle made of high-strength steel, and a comprehensive anti-collision beam design, ensuring the safety of both the driver and passengers. Notably, the Radar King Kong's full-load braking distance is only 39 meters, 6 meters shorter than that of traditional diesel pickups, significantly improving driving safety.
Furthermore, the Radar King Kong provides a passenger car-like steering experience, with a minimum turning radius of just 6.1 meters, making it more maneuverable than fuel-powered pickups. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with excellent noise insulation that ensures a quiet driving experience even in noisy environments. This is made possible by the smooth and quiet driving experience inherent in electric vehicles.
During test drives, many drivers commented that the Radar King Kong feels more like an SUV than a traditional pickup. The acceleration performance is astonishing, with the vehicle reaching 0-100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds even under full load—an unprecedented level of power for a commercial pickup. The peak power and torque of the Radar King Kong are 280 kW and 485 Nm, respectively, far exceeding that of traditional diesel pickups.
In discussions with local owners, it became clear that while electric pickups generally save money compared to fuel vehicles, the savings with the Radar King Kong are even greater than expected. First, the vehicle benefits from no purchase tax, saving over ¥10,000. Additionally, the Radar King Kong consumes only ¥0.05 worth of electricity per kilometer, meaning that over three years, the savings could amount to ¥50,000-60,000. More importantly, the vehicle comes with a lifetime warranty for its three electric systems, ensuring that owners won’t have to worry about maintenance costs in the future, starting from the moment they purchase the vehicle.
The Radar King Kong has achieved the goal of making "electric cheaper than oil." Not only does it benefit from an exemption from the purchase tax, but its energy consumption is just ¥0.05 per kilometer, nearly 93% lower than that of traditional diesel pickups. Over three years, the vehicle can save more than ¥70,000 in energy costs. With a simple maintenance process and a lifetime warranty, the Radar King Kong truly offers a worry-free and cost-effective solution.
For Geely Radar, today marks a historic moment. The launch of the Radar King Kong signifies that, after fulfilling its mission as a pioneer and leader in the new energy pickup market, Geely Radar is shifting its focus towards increasing production and accelerating growth. The company is now entering the mainstream fuel pickup market. With its dual advantage of product and pricing, the Radar King Kong is driving industry transformation, from "oil-electric parity" to "electric cheaper than oil." We are confident in the future of the Radar King Kong and look forward to its commercial success.
