CATL's German Plant to Ramp up Its Production
Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Ltd (CATL) launched its first factory in Europe on January 26 in Arnstadt, Germany, the first plant to be opened outside of China.
At full capacity, the 14 gigawatt-hour (GWh) plant can make 30 million cells annually - enough to power around 350,000 electric cars with a 40 kilowatt-hour battery.
Matthias Zentgraf, President of CATL Europe, said that the project with an investment of 1.8 billion euros (about 13.2 billion yuan), is called “the first high-volume battery production project in Western Europe”.
The plant will start supplying batteries for several European car companies, including BMW as planned.
According to Centegrave, one production line has already been launched in Arnstadt and five more will be in operation in the future, with the plant expected to start series production in the middle of this year.
To meet the large and growing demands for power batteries in Europe, CATL was also reported to be in discussions to establish another battery factory in Hungary.
CATL accounts for the largest share (48.02%) of the global electric-vehicle battery market, according to data. The loading capacity of CATL from January to November was 124.13 GWh, with a market share of 48.02%. CATL has ranked No. 1 in the world for four consecutive years in revenue.
