Tesla's First Semi Truck to be Delivered to Pepsi in December
“Excited to announce start of production of Tesla Semi Truck with deliveries to @Pepsi on Dec 1st! 500 miles range & super fun to drive. “ said, Tesla CEO Elon Musk in the tweet on October 7.
On November 14, 2017, Musk unveiled Tesla's first electric truck, the Semi, in Hawthorne, California, U.S. At the time, Musk said the Semi would be in mass production and delivered in 2019. But since then the Semi electric truck has been pushed back again and again.
In early 2020, Musk told employees in an email that the Semi electric truck was already in limited production and that "it's time to go full steam ahead and put the Semi into volume production." However, in April of that year, Tesla announced on an earnings call that it was delaying the delivery of the Semi electric truck until 2021.
But by 2021, the global automotive industry is again facing serious supply chain challenges. Tesla said the delivery of the Semi electric truck will be delayed until 2022 due to the global supply chain shortage faced by the auto industry and the limited production capacity of Tesla's 4680 batteries.
The Semi electric truck, which is about to be delivered, has actually been on order for five years by PepsiCo.
Back in 2017, PepsiCo booked 100 Semi electric trucks from Tesla in hopes of reducing the company's carbon emissions and lowering transportation costs.
In the middle of this year, several media reported that Semi electric truck tests were seen at PepsiCo's plant as well as on public roads, and that Semi electric truck Superchargers were also installed at PepsiCo's plant.
The truck is reportedly expected to sell for $180,000, though it could qualify for a tax credit of up to $40,000 under a subsidy program approved by the U.S. Senate. The Semi electric truck could achieve an operating cost of $0.40 per mile, which is about half the cost of operating a diesel truck
