The 2014 Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition East China Semi-Final Concludes
www.chinatrucks.com: June 17th, 2014, Shanghai - After launching in Beijing, the Volvo Trucks New FH/FM Product Experience was introduced to Shanghai. Meanwhile, the 2014 Volvo Trucks China Fuelwatch Competition East China Semi-final also concluded today. After a three day training and competition, Liang Hebin, from Changzhou Zhengcheng Logistics, won the East China Semi-final. The new FH has not only provided excellent driving experience, but also facilitated the achievement of better results.
Competition Vehicle——New FH
New FH unveiled at the 2014 Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition
At Volvo Trucks, we are all about driving progress. Volvo is dedicated to driving developments through total offer, including product innovations and concerns for customers and drivers. The Volvo FH has been Volvo Trucks’ flagship model for almost 20 years. The new Volvo FH is pushing the limits on what premium trucks can offer, setting the benchmark for transportation. It’s an immensely important product which Volvo has invested heavily in, spending more than US$3 billion and 14 million engineering hours on product development alone. Furthermore, to ensure perfection, Volvo Trucks tested the vehicles for 21 million kilometres.
The new range and their innovations and related services will bring logistics partners six values: productivity, fuel-efficiency, uptime, safety, security, and driver appeal; further improving companies' profits and competitiveness
The ground-breaking Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS), the most revolutionary steering innovation since the 1960s, delivers an easy driving experience. “During the competition, I found that it was much easier to drive the new FH than the previous models. With the VDS, the truck’s direction will be automatically adjusted, significantly reducing drivers’ fatigue. Now it is just like driving a car, which it’s really cool.”
Liang Hebin from Changzhou Zhengcheng Logistics achieved the top results in the semi-final, saving 25% more on fuel consumption than the last place contestant. He will participate in the China Final in August with the second and third place contestants Xu Shuai and Bao Lichang. The champion of the final will represent China in the global competition in Goteborg, Sweden, headquarters of Volvo Trucks, in September 2014.
Recently, the logistics in East China has been taking the lead in China, focusing mainly on “Special Line” and “Express”. As operation safety and timeliness are becoming the core competitiveness for logistics industry in the future, logistics companies in East China will require higher performance from trucks efficiency, stability and automated management, which means that they will not only require to realize fuel-efficiency, but also lay more emphasis on truck life cycle and scientific management.
In addition to the commitment to improving drivers’ driving skills, Volvo Trucks also creates innovative products to improve fuel efficiency. I-Shift transmission helps drivers change gears at the perfect time throughout the entire drive. When driving in Economy mode, every gear change is timed precisely to let the engine work at its most efficient rpm range. The I-Shift system alone can help operators cut fuel costs by up to 3% when compared with a manual gearbox, depending on the driver and driving conditions. In addition, the more aerodynamic design further reduces fuel consumption by reducing air resistance. Depending on the task at hand, the D11, D13, and D16 engines are all available for use.
The winner, Liang Hebin, was really excited about his result and shared: “I am very happy to participate in this event. The competition provides a platform for truck drivers. Volvo Trucks has been committed to improving driving skills, which will effectively help companies reduce their costs, as well as protect the environment. I think, for me, the transportation business is a lifelong passion.

Truck drivers – Driver appeal in Driving Progress
Truck transport is much more than it used to be, not least of all in terms of the professional role of drivers. Truck drivers are not merely expected to drive a truck from point A to point B anymore. Nowadays they also have to take care of business such as dealing with paperwork, interacting with the back-office for order handling and route planning and they play an active role in strengthening customer relations. They also have to know how to save fuel, optimize loads and drive safely.
“Driving trucks is a profession – there is always room to improve and grow,” says Eric Labat, president of Volvo Trucks China, “Drivers have to keep up with technological developments and sharpen their skills. Learning that little extra bit of knowledge can bring about a big impact on the operator’s bottom line. This is why we are leading the way in driver training – teaching drivers so that they can make the right decisions in any traffic situation. At the same time, the Volvo Trucks Public Driver Training and Fuelwatch Competition are also aimed at improving drivers’ skills.”
For six consecutive years, Volvo Trucks has been using its expertise in driver development training to hold the Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition in China. This world famous campaign aims to help truck drivers enhance their fuel efficiency skills and safe driving awareness. Fuel efficiency matters not only for corporation profits, but is also important for environmental protection. Additionally, if drivers are more fuel-efficient, their income will increase in turn. Since 2009, the campaign has been widely recognized and well received among drivers and Volvo Trucks owners. Volvo Trucks Public Driver Training has provided free courses to over 4,000 public drivers since 2012, proving Volvo Trucks’ strong sense of social responsibility. In 2014, as part of its 80th Anniversary in China, Volvo Trucks has announced the “Volvo Trucks China Dream Program”, intending to help more truck drivers realize both their career and life dreams.
The new range has been officially unveiled in China. In addition to Beijing and Shanghai, the Volvo Trucks New FH/FM Product Experience will be held in Guangzhou and Chengdu this summer, bringing Chinese truck fans the extraordinary Volvo trucks experience.
