Liu Jinqiang from China wins Volvo Trucks Asia Fuelwatch Championship 2012
www.chinatrucks.com. The 2012 Asia Pacific Fuelwatch final, held in Geelong, Australia, saw many winners. The trophy for the Asia champion however went to Chinese hero, Liu Jinqiang this year.
11 drivers from 8 countries had been invited by Volvo Trucks to Geelong in Australia for the annual Fuelwatch championship, after winning their national Fuelwatch competitions prior this year. Yesterday it was then about finding out who is the most fuel efficient Volvo Trucks driver in Asia and Asia Pacific. Meanwhile, Cui Neng, The Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Ambassador in China, also visited the 2012 Fuelwatch Asia Pacific Final in Geelong and exchange experience with contestants.
In the end it was Liu Jinqiang from China who got awarded as Volvo Trucks Asia Fuelwatch Champion 2012 and Chris Sanders got awarded as Asia Pacific champion during yesterday’s gala dinner that marked the closing of a memorable competition event. Both Liu Jinqiang and Chris Sanders will be invited to the headquarter of Volvo Trucks in Gothenburg. It is the first time of Chinese contestant to win the Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition. Liu Jinqiang from China Railway Express, who has 29 years’ driving experience, championed the Asian competition through his advanced and stable fuel-saving driving skill in this year’s competitive final.

With China, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and Australia sending their best drivers, it was a challenge on a very high level. After all, the contestants had qualified against more than 2500 drivers in the prior national competitions, held all over the Asia Pacific region.
“Fuelwatch is a fantastic concept”, stated Joachim Rosenberg, President of Volvo Group Trucks, Sales & Marketing and JVs APAC. “Many people think of Fuelwatch only as a competition. But it is more than that. Fuelwatch is in fact most importantly a competence development effort. It helps all of us, the drivers, their companies, to think more about how to save fuel, how to care for the environment. In addition, Fuelwatch is also Volvo Trucks’ way of addressing the society, making sure that we impact the industry, to drive progress in terms of fuel efficiency.”
Vehicles in the Competition: FH540 and FMX
In 2012,73 contestants participated in China’s Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition, and as part of the Fuelwatch added value service, 45 open driver trainings were held in more than 20 cities with a total of over 2,000 people’ participation. Totally 20,000 hours’ fuel-saving driving trainings were provided by Volvo Trucks in 2012. In addition, starting from second half of 2012, The Fuelwatch training is open to individual driver and companies, and the consultation services and onsite support are being provided to customers’ internal Fuelwatch Competition. One China’s dangerous goods transportation company became the first company to host an in-house Fuelwatch Competition in China.
Given the importance of Fuelwatch, Joachim Rosenberg also expressed his confidence about the future of the competition: “I can promise, we will continue with Fuelwatch in Asia Pacific. And with the years, it will also become a global event.”
