www.chinatrucks.com: March 31, 2012, Guangzhou, China – The 2012 Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition South China semi-final concluded yesterday. Contestant Hu Xilong from Guangzhou Lijin Logistics Co., Ltd. performed excellently on the written exam, driving behaviors and the figure of fuel-consumption, topping the South China semi-final. The runner up, Li Zhenggui of the Shenzhen Hen Road Logistics and the third place winner, Zhou Yongren of the Nanning Yinquan Logistics, will join Hu Xilong in the national finals to be held this June.

We are about to set off!

The 2012 Volvo Trucks Fuelwatch Competition consists of three parts: a written exam counts for 20% of the total score; 30% is determined by practical operation; and 50% is based on fuel consumption levels. According to event data, the  fuel consumption of the South China competition ranges between 25.5 and 29.3 liters per hundred kilometers. In such a top level fuel-saving competition, the first place contestant saved 13% more per hundred kilometers in fuel costs than did the contestant placing in last place. It means a company will save RMB 6,315.6 worth of fuel costs per month if a truck runs 20,000 kilometers monthly and the price of diesel is valued at RMB 8.31 per liter. (Figures are calculated based on driving Volvo Trucks.)

The 20 years’ truck driving veteran, Mr. Hu Xilong, is very excited about his victory and fuel-consumption score. He shared the following tips with other drivers: “Step lightly on the throttle, try to keep a constant speed, and stay focused in order to foresee road conditions.”

All contestants have been trained by Volvo Trucks on Safety and Fuel-saving, and have applied skills in driving.  The Volvo Trucks Dynafleet System records driving data of each Volvo Truck and analyze it in order to provide feedback to the fleet manger and drivers to help them improve their driving skills and behaviors.

Attaining high fuel efficiency is important for both economic and environmental reasons. Not only can improving fuel efficiency directly improve operation efficiency, it can also help drivers improve their fuel-saving skills and increase their incomes. It is known that proper fuel-saving incentive programs have been executed by some logistics companies and the results are good. The monthly fuel consumption of contestants is between 29 and 33 liters per hundred kilometers.

Through its Fuelwatch Competition, Volvo Trucks hopes not only to improve drivers’ fuel-saving skills, but also to provide them with a platform to show off their style. Volvo Trucks statistics show that driving behavior is relevant to impacts on fuel consumption by 20% and that poor driving skills can cause a 50% increase in fuel consumption.

In contrast to previous years, this year’s Fuelwatch Competition includes Open Driver Training sessions that are also open to non-Volvo Trucks drivers. The trainings introduce factors that influence fuel-consumption and knowledge and skills on safety and fuel-saving driving.   Additionally, any individual can share his or her experiences relevance to fuel-saving in 360che.com to win the the title of Volvo Trucks ”Fuelwatch Ambassador,” and will be awarded a trip to Sweden to visit the global final of The 2012 Volvo Truck Fuelwatch Competition together with the champion of the China competition.
